Holiday Bird Seed Ornaments

Holiday Bird Seed Ornaments

Especially in the winter, birds can use a little help from their friends (that’s you 🙂 ). These seed ornaments are a perfectly festive way to nourish and entertain them at the same time. And as they feast, they’ll entertain you!

Hang them on a dry or snowy winter day (warm weather and rain will melt the coconut oil).

Coconut oil is a great setting agent since it isn’t derived from animals and contains no potentially harmful additives.

Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil
  • Bird seed
  • Stick
  • Visible string or ribbon (in which birds can’t accidentally get entangled)
  • Cookie cutter
  • Parchment paper

Instructions:

Line a plate or tray with parchment paper and place cookie cutters on it. Measure equal parts coconut oil and bird seed. Heat the coconut oil to liquify it and then mix in the bird seed. Let the mixture cool a little so the oil doesn’t run amok. Spoon into cookie cutters to the brim. Place upright (and leave in) a small stick toward the top to create the hole for hanging. Cool outside or in the fridge until set (a hour should do it). Remove the stick, press out of the cookie cutter and peel off the parchment paper. Then thread string or ribbon through hole to hang.

Pick a tree or bush with ample perching branches near a window and watch the birds revel!
