Water Glee, Part I:
10 Sensational Stream Stomps
Here are a few of our favorite antidotes for these steamy days!
Whittling down to 10 stomps is tough - since at least a sweet little brook babbles through most preserves. Footpath far enough and you'll tend to find water everywhere.
Click here for water quality info (we just make sure we wear water shoes, keep stream water out of our mouths and bath stomp afterwards).
HAPPY SPLASHING!!

A picturesque stream curves through a rustic frisbee golf course draped with Tibetan prayer flags. An observation deck hovers over a forgotten marsh. Stepping stones and wooden planks lead into a forest that hides a stone labyrinth. And throughout, lovely, giant leaves of stone lie beneath the trees they honor. Magic lurks here. Though this preserve feels sweet and discrete, it's actually quite large. The tight, snaking purple trail is jam packed with lovely vignettes, mini pastures, creeks and cedar passageways and it's not until you reach the final loop that the scale shifts, opening up to broad woodland. The red, yellow and purple trails ultimately cast off into 3 disconnected land parcels …

New playground, picnic tables, BBQ pits, flat rock beaches, shallow river, winding footpaths, mini cliffs, a port-a-potty - all waiting for you if you don't blink as you're driving past. Bring water shoes, a picnic blanket, bug spray and several spare hours. DIRECTIONS AS A WINE.... A Barbera d'Asti: herbaceous and chewy with fresh red raspberry and cherry notes all …

Such care has gone into sharing this magical place, buried in the woods. Beginning at the trail head, signs appoint the pathway like footmen guiding your passage, describing the historic features and monumental trees. The short, flat loop is under a mile, but plan on spending several hours because the Rock Mill Brook you meet mid-loop is a perfect splash …

These are the things footpathing dreams are made of - all in one demure and lovely place. You'll find a clear, level bike path, endless meadow, towering forest, subway-like tunnels through fresh leafy bushes and a sweet stream that loops through the woods like a curly fry. And if you catch it in April and May - the blossoms are …

A natural amusement park, this wonderful trail starts at a horse stable, glides along a swan lake, moguls over a parade of little mossy knolls past a storied abandoned Rambler under tall canopies and back to the horse pastures. The Lawrenceville-Hopewell Bike Trail also sweeps through, connecting Rosedale Park to the Watershed. TRAIL MAP DIRECTIONS AS A WINE.... She'd be …

The expansive recreation lawn, brand new playground and large gazebo with plush BBQs come into view when you pull into the large parking lot. The wonderfully intricate and naturally ornamental sculptures reveal themselves only as you set off into the nature trails. Ditto for the trickling brook. This place is loaded with heart warming and entertaining discoverables. TRAIL MAP DIRECTIONS …

Unless you were at Herrontown Woods this morning, there's something new for you to discover there. Exuberant and deft hands are clearing new trails, laying stepping stones, building yurts (!), expanding the botanical garden, restoring the Veblen house, dressing the skeleton in the bathtub, replenishing balls for the ping pong table, creating sculptures, whittling a "welcome" sign for goodness' sake …

There's an epic aura to this place - Sherwood Forest meets the Serengeti. Trails start from either Van Dyke or Stony Brook Roads; and either way you begin at a grand meadow before detailing along streams and original stone walls through the woods. The vast meadow (aka the Serengeti) at the Stony Brook end is not to be missed - …

We waded in Huckleberry Finn's footsteps here. Broad, mowed trails on the hill drop to an under realm of pure adventure. From the parking lot, paths lure you through the preserve to a trail marker leading down to the river, zigzagging down a steep ravine and then, step stoning across a stream. A few steps further, curving through woodlands, a …
