Lord Stirling Park Trail

Lord Stirling Park Trail

We expected boardwalks to go to great lengths here – but we couldn’t have dreamed of this! Crossing a patchwork of lake, swamps, forest and meadows, boardwalks make up one third of the 9.5 miles of trails. Portions are new, sturdy and railed, others are the opposite – and most are forbidding for the toddler set.

The trail map is appointed with fanciful way stations, like “The Dance Floor,” “Boondocks Boardwalk” (which you won’t want to miss), “Firefly Bridge,” or “Blueberry Way.” A charming children’s garden is tucked between the lake and the nature center, near the parking lot.

The day after rain, the boardwalks, especially the greener, slightly swamp-submerged ones, were quite slippery. Wear boots with traction. Since this a wildlife refuge, no pets allowed on trails.
