This one’s like a magic trick. A simple (looking) stick – or wand, if you will – placed in water at the end of January sprouts flowers by the time February arrives! There are a handful of flowering shrubs, most famously Forsythia and Pussy Willow, which you can encourage to bloom indoors weeks ahead of their natural schedule. From your garden, cut a long stalk (at least 12″), place in a vase in a warm spot and wait impatiently!
Shrubs to try this with:
- Azalea
- Beautybush
- Forsythia
- Magnolia
- Pussy Willow
- Redbud
- Rhododendron
- Spirea
- Witch Hazel
