Draped with endless strands of loops and switchbacks connected by steep, sculptural stone stairways, the hillside garden reveals exquisite plant life and a breathtaking view at every bend. From the parking lot behind Ventura’s handsome City Hall, enter the garden through the nursery, for a fee of $7 per adult (children are free and memberships are available). From here, the path winds through many landscapes, showcasing plants from the Mediterranean, South Africa, Chile and of course, the best of California. A small amphitheater, bridges, sculptures and artisanal benches are scattered throughout. From the top of the gardens, panoramic views extend all the way to Catalina Island on a clear day, I’m told.
