For key-carrying residents, the High Tower is a 1920s elevator from a bank of garages to the meta level of meandering pathways leading to quirky stoops and gateways. For the rest of us, it’s a totem of old Hollywood glamour, hidden away around the corner from the Hollywood Bowl. There are plenty of Escheresque alternatives to the elevator, cutting up through bougainvillea vines, palm leaves and loquat trees to idyllic vignettes and oblique views of Los Angeles fading into the horizon. Every eyeful is overflowing with character.
